Columbia Court Docket Overview
Which Court Handles Columbia Cases
Columbia has no incorporated city government and no city courts. It's a planned community that spans several villages inside Howard County. Because of that, all court filings that come from Columbia addresses go to Howard County's court system. This is important when you search. You need to select "Howard County" as your jurisdiction in Maryland Case Search, not "Columbia."
The Howard County court docket page has more detail on the county court system. The Circuit Court for Howard County sits at 8360 Court Avenue in Ellicott City, which is the county seat. That address handles all circuit-level cases for the entire county, including everything from Columbia.

Searching Columbia Court Docket Records Online
Maryland offers free public access to court docket records at Maryland Case Search. No account is needed. A CAPTCHA check is required before each search. Once past that, you can search by party name, case number, or attorney name.
Search Tips
Use the percent sign (%) as a wildcard in name searches. Entering "Jones%" will return Jones, Joneson, and any other last name starting with Jones. This is especially useful if you're not sure of an exact spelling. Results are capped at 500 per search, so be as specific as you can when searching common names.
Select "Howard County" as the county. Records from Columbia will be filed under Howard County since that's the jurisdiction. The system updates every night, so a case filed today may not show up until tomorrow.
Under Maryland's 2024 law, some case records where charges were dismissed, entered as nolle prosequi, or ended in acquittal are removed from the online database. If you believe a case exists but can't find it online, you can request an in-person search at the Clerk's office. Those records are still accessible; they're just not visible online.
Getting Copies of Court Records
The Clerk's office at the Howard County Circuit Court makes copies of court docket records. Plain copies are $0.50 per page. Certified copies cost $5.00 plus $0.50 per page. Exemplified copies (the highest level of authentication, often needed for out-of-state use) are $10.00 plus $0.50 per page.
You can request copies in person at the courthouse in Ellicott City. Mail requests are also accepted. Include the case number, the specific documents you want, your contact information, and a check or money order for the estimated fee. If you're not sure of the exact amount, call the Clerk's office first.
MDEC e-filing kiosks inside the courthouse also allow public users to view and print court documents. These public access kiosks are available during courthouse hours at all MDEC-enabled locations.
