Baltimore City Court Docket Overview
Baltimore City as a Standalone Jurisdiction
Most people don't realize that Baltimore City is not part of Baltimore County. It is one of Maryland's 24 independent jurisdictions, making it distinct from every county in the state. When you look up a Baltimore City court docket record, you're searching a separate court system from anything run by Baltimore County. The city has its own Circuit Court, its own District Court locations, its own Register of Wills, and its own court administration.
This matters when you search. If you look up a case and select "Baltimore City" in Maryland Case Search, you'll only see cases from city courts. Cases from Baltimore County courts are filed and stored separately. Getting the right jurisdiction right from the start saves a lot of time.
The Maryland courts directory for Baltimore City lists all court locations, phone numbers, and hours in one place. It's the best first stop if you're not sure which court handled a specific case.

The Circuit Court for Baltimore City is the main trial court for serious civil and criminal matters in the city. It sits in the 3rd Judicial Circuit. The Circuit Court Clerk's office is the custodian of all Circuit Court case files. You can request copies of court docket records, case documents, and judgments through that office.
What the Circuit Court Handles
The Circuit Court takes on felony criminal cases, large civil disputes, domestic matters, and equity cases. It also hears appeals from the District Court. If a case started in District Court and was appealed, the full trial happens in Circuit Court. Family cases like custody and divorce are filed here too. The docket can be searched by name or case number through Maryland's online Case Search tool.
District Court Locations in Baltimore City
Baltimore City has several District Court locations. These courts handle misdemeanor criminal cases, small civil claims, traffic violations, and landlord-tenant matters. Cases under certain dollar limits must start in District Court rather than Circuit Court.
One of the main District Court locations is the Wabash facility. The Baltimore City Wabash District Court directory lists contact details, hours, and the types of cases handled at that location. Different parts of the city may be served by different District Court locations, so it helps to check which one applies to your case.

How to Search Baltimore City Court Docket Records Online
Maryland offers free online access to court docket records through Maryland Case Search. You do not need to pay or create an account. The system requires you to pass a CAPTCHA before searching. Once through, you can search by name, case number, or party type.
Tips for Searching Effectively
Use the percent sign (%) as a wildcard. Typing "Smith%" finds Smith, Smithson, Smithfield, and any other name starting with Smith. This is helpful when you're not sure of a spelling. The system caps results at 500 records, so adding more name details helps narrow things down.
Always select "Baltimore City" as your jurisdiction. If you leave it on statewide, you might get results from multiple jurisdictions mixed together. Court docket records are updated nightly, so recent filings may not appear right away.
Note that under a 2024 Maryland law, some case records that ended in dismissal, nolle prosequi, or acquittal are no longer visible in the online system. Those records can still be accessed in person at the courthouse. If you can't find a case you're sure exists, visiting the Clerk's office directly is the best next step.
Getting Copies of Court Records
The Circuit Court Clerk's office makes copies of court docket records for a fee. Plain copies cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies cost $5.00 plus $0.50 per page. If you need an exemplified copy (the highest level of authentication), the fee is $10.00 plus $0.50 per page.
You can request copies in person at the courthouse, by mail, or in some cases through the MDEC e-filing system at public access kiosks available inside the courthouse. If you visit in person, bring the case number if you have it. The Clerk's staff can help locate the file, but a case number speeds things up considerably.
Some older records may be on microfilm or in archived storage. The Clerk can tell you the turnaround time for older files. For recent cases, copies are usually available the same day.
Land Records for Baltimore City
Baltimore City maintains its own land records separate from any county system. If you need property transfer records, deeds, or mortgage documents for Baltimore City properties, use MDLandRec.net. Registration is free, and the database goes back many years. Land records are filed with the Baltimore City Land Records office, not with the Circuit Court Clerk.
For property-related court cases such as foreclosures or tax sales, those court docket records would be in the Circuit Court system and searchable through Maryland Case Search.
